It’s been four years since Pasadena City College women’s basketball head coach Joe Peron enjoyed a 20-win season. On Wednesday, the Lancers reached the 20th win plateau for the 14th time in 21 seasons under Peron’s leadership behind an 80-62 victory over Rio Hondo at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
The state’s No. 17-ranked Lancers are 20-8 overall and now 4-5 in the South Coast Conference North Division. On Friday, PCC will finish the regular season in a 7 p.m. contest at state No. 1-rated East Los Angeles. Game time is 7 p.m. following the men’s game.
The Lancers started slowly, leading just 8-7 after one quarter and a modest 29-22 by halftime.
In the second half, both teams went to a faster pace but the Roadrunners (4-22, 0-9) were as close as 55-51 two minutes into the fourth quarter. Jolene Robinson then drained a trey and Kailyn Gideon completed a 3-point play on a free throw to up the lead to 10, allowing PCC to take control.
Overall, Robinson scored all 17 of her points in the second half. Center Alisa Shinn came off the bench to lead the Lancers with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Starting center Gideon added 15 points and 10 rebounds while Samaiyah Abdullah contributed nine points and five assists. For Rio Hondo, Aliyah Montiel scored a game-high 23 points.
“I’ll look back when my coaching career is over at all of our great seasons here,” Peron said of his achievements, including six conference titles and a state championship in 2009. “For now, I need to get us focused on the playoffs. We have a veteran team (eight sophomores) and I’m counting on the experience to make a difference.”
